The Maryland Association of Soil Conservation Districts (MASCD) has recently decided to rebrand its traditional Farm Stewardship Certification and Assessment Program (FSCAP). The program will now be known as the Bay Friendly Farms Program. The hope is that the rebranding will help attract more attention and participation in the program.

There are currently 32 horse farms in Maryland that have been named Certified Agricultural Conservation Stewards through FSCAP, including Maryland Horse Council member farms Waredaca, Meadowbrook Stables, Persimmon Tree Farm, Wyndham Oaks, Hilltop Farm, Bloomsbury Forge, Potomac Horse Center and Obligation Farm. The 32 horse farms protect over 3,300 acres of land.

To become certified, farm owners can apply for the Bay Friendly Farms program through contacting their local MASCD. MASCD staff will then visit the farm to review its nutrient management plan, soil conservation and water quality plans, and other relevant documents to determine if the farm complies with certification standards. Farmers must demonstrate successful implementation of a nutrient management plan that meets state standards and also show the highest levels of best management practices related to soil and water conservation.

Farms that become certified benefit with a three-year waiver from state nutrient management inspections as well as being able to display signage recognizing the farm as a Bay Friendly Farm.
