Yesterday, February 5th, the Equine Disease Communication Center confirmed that a horse at a boarding barn in Montgomery County tested positive for strangles.

The horse showed fever and nasal discharge on January 20, and subsequently tested positive for Strep equi on nasopharyngeal wash PCR. The horse was up to date on its strangles vaccination, and has since been quarantined.

Four other horses at the facility have also shown clinical signs of strangles, including fever, nasal discharge, and guttural pouch empyema, but have been negative on PCR of guttural pouch fluid.
