The Friends of Patapsco Valley State Park (FPVSP) is leading an initiative to transform the Whiting Property, formerly the Maryland Council for Special Equestrians, and also known as the Patapsco Horse Center, into an accessible hub for trails and community use.
FPVSP has secured over $400,000 to address critical maintenance needs, including debris removal, roof and building envelope repairs, and essential system upgrades. With direct access to the Patapsco Valley State Park’s 220-mile trail network, the property will expand access for park users and also preserve and enhance equestrian opportunities, with a particular focus on therapeutic and adaptive riding.
“Horses have long been an essential part of the park, and our strong partnerships with the equestrian community will be foundational as we plan for the site’s future use.” – Dave Ferraro, Executive Director Friends of Patapsco Valley State Park
Patapsco Valley State Park continues to experience record-breaking visitation, with formal park entrances frequently reaching capacity and closing during peak periods. This sustained growth in use puts increasing pressure on trails, facilities, and natural resources.
FPVSP told The Equiery earlier this month that now, more than ever, park communities must step into the gap between available public funding and the level of care required to support this demand and protect the landscapes we all share.
