Cases of the neurological version of EHV1 have been confirmed around the country in recent days, traced back to horses returning from competitions in Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana.
The National Barrel Racing Association and the National Pole Benders Association have suspended sanctioned competition until the first week of December, at which time they will re-assess the situation.
Some Maryland horses who attended those competitions have come up in the contract tracing efforts that the country’s state veterinarians are conducting this week.
Barrel Horse News published a comprehensive timeline covering the cases confirmed in the last 48 hours.
The fatal case of EHV-1 in St. Mary’s county last week is currently thought to be unrelated to this more recent outbreak.
This is a developing story and we will keep the community updated as we learn more information.
