EDCC reported yesterday, April 17, that a horse with EHV-1 has been euthanized and 42 others have been quarantined at the HITS show ground facilities in Culpeper, Virginia. Marylanders hunter/jumper riders travel frequently to the Culpeper show grounds.
The horse was a 21 year-old Thoroughbred gelding who began showing symptoms yesterday, April 17. Clinical signs included lethargy, distal limb edema, and acute onset ataxia. The referring veterinarian evaluated the horse at HITS Culpeper and the horse was then transferred to an equine hospital. He was admitted directly to the isolation unit and subsequently euthanized.
Forty-two horses in Barn 5 were exposed to the index horse, and they have all been quarantined by the state veterinarian.
We do not know at this time whether the horse was vaccinated, nor do we know where the horse had traveled from.
