The Equine Disease Communication Center reported today that a 24-year-old mare at a private facility in Anne Arundel County has been euthanized after contracting a case of suspected strangles. The mare presented with swollen submandibular lymph nodes and thick and yellow /white nasal discharge. She had difficulty breathing to the extent that she needed a tracheostomy. The symptoms began on October 27 and the owner put the property into voluntary quarantine.
Six other horses are believe to have been exposed.
This is the first fatality in what has been an especially active strangles year.
