This morning, Maryland State Veterinarian Dr. Jennifer Trout gave The Equiery information on the metrics the State will use to determine when to lift the intrastate requirement for 30-day Certifcates of Veterinary Inspection.

Requirements for equine movement, including both intrastate and interstate travel, shall remain in effect until such time as the State Veterinarian determines that the epidemiological risk no longer necessitates the issuance of Certificates of Veterinary Inspection (CVIs). Based on the most recent diagnosis of EHV/EHM on December 29, 2025, these movement requirements will remain in place until the affected horse has tested negative and two full infectious cycles have elapsed without the identification of additional cases. In addition, interstate epidemiological links have been identified, and we are coordinating closely with other states to ensure that exposed animals are appropriately monitored for any clinical signs of disease.

Dr. Trout said that one EHV/EHM infection cycle is approximately 14 days. She also said the interstate epidemiological links are with Pennsylvania.
