This year’s Art of Racing Winner is Steve Luhn, whose work entitled “Winning Colors,” bested over 250 submissions in the Preakness annual art contest. In its fourth year, the contest, sponsored by 1/ST and The Maryland Jockey Club, received the most entries this year. The winning artwork was announced during a ceremony at the Baltimore City Hall on April 8.“
My representation of horse racing captures the dynamic energy and excitement of the sport,” Luhn stated during the ceremony, adding, “Bold, vibrant colors and striking visual elements convey the intensity of the race, with the horse mid-gallop, jockey leaning forward, creating a sense of speed and competition.”
As the winner, Luhn received a $4,000 cash prize and two VIP tickets to the 150th running of the Preakness Stakes on May 17. His work will also be reproduced on a curated collection of Preakness 150 merchandise that will be available online and at Pimlico during Preakness week. All proceeds from the sale of that merchandise will go to the Park Heights Renaissance to help provide affordable housing for families as well as employment opportunities for the people of Park Heights.
