We reported in our April issue on an animal abuse investigation underway in Dorchester County. We have received additional information since going to press.
The investigation is of the Naylor Mill Horse Sanctuary in Hurlock and was prompted by photos circulating on social media. At one time, the Naylor Mill farm was home to at least 20 “ex-racehorses.” WMDT reporter Brian Roche spoke with Sheriff James Phillips about the initial findings and whether or not animal abuse has been confirmed. Sheriff Phillips said:
“Under state law, if you can prove food, water and shelter, it kind of limits what we can do with horses. So that’s where we left. We were not able to seize the horses. There were goats there. She checked the goats. They were all being fed, taking care of there was water available, there was food available.”
Sheriff Phillips also confirmed, however, that one horse had to be euthanized by a veterinarian when the Sheriff’s Office arrived.
As for next steps, Sheriff Phillips told WMDT that:
“The owner of the Naylor Mill horse farm has relinquished her rights to the horses, and we are currently working with a reputable horse rescue from the northern part of the state of Maryland that’s going to come down and take custody of all the horses.”
We will update this story as information becomes available.
