After finishing seventh in the Kentucky Derby and skipping the Preakness Stakes, Union Rags edged out Paynter in tonight’s Belmont Stakes. Trained by Michael Matz out of the Fair Hill Training Center in Elkton and owned by Phyliss Wyeth, Union Rags stayed on the rail for most of the race with jockey John Velazquez pushing him past Paynter in the final 20 yards to win by a neck.
