Five-year-old mare Bosserati (Holy Boss x Candy Striper (Twirling Candy)), bred and owned by Dr. Joel Politi — an orthopedic surgeon by day — won today’s $100,000 The Very One Stakes presented by Guinness Open Gate Brewery at Pimlico Race Course. She had won the Maryland Million Turf Sprint at Laurel Park in October 2024, but had not raced in 5 ½ months.
Bosserati is trained by Brittany Russell, Maryland’s leading trainer by wins in 2023 and 2024, and was ridden by five-time Eclipse Award jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. Russell said Bosserati’s win “just saved my whole week.” Ortiz Jr. “rode her great,” she said. “She likes it here at home.”
For his part, Ortiz, Jr. said “I just let her be her. She likes to be on the lead setting the pace. We broke good and she rolled. Turning for home and in the stretch, she doesn’t want to give up the lead. I wasn’t even using her. She was just nice and relaxed and full of run.”
Congratulations to all of Bosserati’s Maryland connections!
