According to the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC), a horse at a boarding facility in Montgomery County has been diagnosed with Equine Herpesvirus-Respiratory (EHV-4). This version of EHV is not the same as EHV-1 (the neurological form of EHV).
The infected horse was first reported to EDCC by the treating veterinarian on March 5, 2020. At that time, only one of the 60 horses at the boarding facility tested positive. The farm initiated its own quarantine and is monitoring the other horses at the facility.
MDA State Veterinarian told The Equiery this afternoon that EHV-4 is a non reportable disease but that MDA is keeping an eye on the farm where the confirmed case is located.
EDCC has a second alert of EHV-4 listed on March 3, 2020. This alert (#1591) lists one horse in Montgomery County infected with three others exposed. In this case, a 12-year-old Shetland Pony mare was confirmed with EHV-4 on February 28, 2020 and is currently recovering. That particular pony had been previously vaccinated. The facility also initiated a voluntary quarantine.
